Did the shimmering gopuram of the Kapaleeswarar Temple always pierce the Chennai skyline? No. The Kapaleeswarar Temple, as we see it today, stands as a testament to devotion rebuilt. The original Kapaleeswarar Temple, sung about by the Nayanar saints, stood by the seashore. The crashing waves and salty air once kissed its walls, unlike its current inland location. The 7th-century hymns of Sambandar and Arunagirinathar speak of this lost seaside shrine. This suggests that the temple we stand before now rose from the ashes of its predecessor, likely relocated further inland. The magnificent gopuram, reaching 120 feet towards the heavens, wasn’t even part of the original design. This vibrant, stucco-adorned tower was added in 1906, a relatively recent addition to the temple’s long history. The Kapaleeswarar Temple is dedicated to Shiva, worshipped here as Kapaleeshwarar, the “Lord of the Head.” The name stems from a tale where Shiva, angered by Brahma’s disrespect, plucked one of his heads. In an act of penance, Brahma installed a lingam at Mylapore, thus giving birth to the first Kapaleeswarar Temple. Within these walls also resides Karpagambal, Parvati’s form as the goddess of the wish-yielding tree. Legend says she worshipped Shiva here as a peahen, giving the area its name, Mylapore, derived from “Mayil,” the Tamil word for peacock. The temple complex itself is a vibrant hub of activity. Six daily rituals fill the air with chants and the scent of incense, from the early morning Ushathkalam at 5:30 a.m. to the late evening Ardha Jamam at 9:00 p.m. Four yearly festivals bring the entire neighborhood to life, especially the Panguni Peruvila in the Tamil month of Panguni. This spring festival culminates in the Arupathimoovar festival, a grand procession honoring the 63 Nayanar saints, their bronze idols following Kapaleeshwarar through the streets. Even the temple tank, west of the main shrine, holds significance. The annual float festival sees Kapaleeshwarar and other deities carried across the water, Vedic hymns echoing across the surface. The Kapaleeswarar Temple is more than just a structure. It is a living story, a testament to faith and resilience, whispered through the rustling leaves of the ancient Punnai tree, one of Chennai’s oldest, standing within the temple grounds.
