“Kannadasan, a literary legend immortalized in stone!” That’s what I always say when I see new faces approach this statue.

Welcome to the Kannadasan Statue. It stands tall in the heart of T Nagar in Chennai. This is more than just a statue. It is a tribute to a poet, a lyricist, and a cultural icon.

Kannadasan was a literary giant. He enriched Tamil literature and music. Born Muthiah, he later adopted the name Kannadasan. This name means servant of Lord Krishna. He was a keen follower of the Dravidian atheistic movement early in life. Later he embraced Hinduism.

Kannadasan was a prolific writer. He penned over 5000 lyrics. He also wrote 6000 poems and 232 books. His works include novels, epics, plays, and essays. Arthamulla Indhu Matham is his most popular work. It is a 10-part religious book on Hinduism.

Kannadasan received many awards. He won the Sahitya Akademi Award for his novel Cheraman Kathali in 1980. He was the first to receive the National Film Award for Best Lyrics in 1969. This award was for the film Kuzhanthaikkaga.

As you stand here, observe the statue closely. Notice the intricate details. Feel the serene expression on Kannadasan’s face. It reflects his profound contributions to Tamil culture. The statue reminds us of Chennai’s rich heritage.

Kannadasan died in Chicago in 1981. He was attending a Tamil conference. He was only 54. His last song was “Kanne Kalaimane” from the film Moondram Pirai.
