Crossing the Kanjin bashi bridge, did you ever think about its name? Kanjin means “to contribute for religious purposes”. This tells us something fascinating about the Kanjin bashi bridge’s past. It used to be a toll bridge. People had to pay to cross. In the past, this bridge over the Kamogawa River was called “Zenitori-bashi”. “Zenitori” meant “charged”. So the name literally told you that you had to pay. While the Kanjin bashi bridge may not be as historically significant as other spots in Kyoto, it does have a connection to the Shinsengumi. This special police force played a key role during the late shogunate period. The Shinsengumi activity log mentions Kanjin bashi bridge twice. First, in June 1864, the Shinsengumi camped near the bridge during a tense standoff with Choshu forces. Then, in June 1866, a high-ranking Shinsengumi officer, suspected of colluding with the Satsuma clan, was killed near Kanjin bashi bridge. Imagine the scene. The old Kanjin bashi bridge was a simple wooden structure, probably without railings. During the Meiji era, it was rebuilt to accommodate trams. The bridge became much larger. There are even pictures showing the streetcar running on the Kanjin bashi bridge. The bridge had separate lanes for the streetcar and pedestrians. The area around Kanjin bashi bridge has changed drastically over time. Factories once lined the riverbanks. Now, modern condominiums and the Hanshin Expressway have reshaped the landscape. One thing remains though: the cherry blossoms. In spring, their delicate pink blooms still grace the banks of the Kamogawa River near Kanjin bashi bridge, adding a touch of timeless beauty to this ever-evolving area.
