Established in 1881 Kanadevia Corporation has a rich history. It began as Osaka Iron Works a testament to Osaka’s industrial prowess. Edward H Hunter a British entrepreneur founded the company. He aimed to boost Japan’s steel and shipbuilding. His vision was ambitious. Hunter wanted a self-sufficient company. It would produce engines boilers bridges and even irrigation equipment.

The company’s first vessel the Hatsumaru launched in 1882. This marked a significant milestone. It demonstrated Hunter’s commitment to shipbuilding. Later Osaka Iron Works expanded. A new facility was built on the Aji River. This allowed construction of larger ships over 1000 tons. The Tora Maru Japan’s first oil tanker was launched here in 1908. It was built for the Standard Oil Company.

Kanadevia’s growth was impressive. It continued to expand its operations. A new shipyard opened in Innoshima Hiroshima in 1911. The company even built many of Osaka’s iron bridges. It later diversified into hydroelectric power plant equipment. This was a smart move that ensured the company’s future.

The company’s name changed many times. In 1934 it became K K Nihon Sangyo Osaka Tekkosho. It was later renamed Hitachi Zosen Corporation in 1943. This reflected its association with Hitachi. The name changed again in October 2024. It became Kanadevia Corporation. This signals a new era for this long standing firm.

Post World War II Kanadevia faced challenges. It had to adapt and diversify. The company faced financial difficulties in the 1970s. The global oil crisis affected its shipbuilding business. Kanadevia moved into other markets. It successfully expanded into industrial and municipal waste disposal facilities. In 2002 Kanadevia sold its shipbuilding operations. This bold move focused the company on its core competencies.

Today Kanadevia Corporation stands tall. It’s a symbol of Japanese innovation and engineering excellence. It’s a diverse company making waste treatment plants industrial plants and more.
