The government started a program to relocate residents from Kampong Ayer, Brunei’s iconic water village. They needed to provide homes on land. Many families, displaced by a devastating fire, were also in need of new homes. So, in 1983, Kampong Perpindahan Mata-Mata, meaning “Mata-Mata Relocation Village,” came to be. It became a place of new beginnings. The Kampong Perpindahan Mata-Mata Gadong Mosque was a vital part of this new community. Construction began in 1982. The mosque opened its doors for prayers on May 29th, 1984. Then, just a few months later, it was officially inaugurated on September 28th, 1984. This mosque, with its capacity to accommodate 300 worshippers, became a symbol of resilience and community for the relocated residents. Over time, the Kampong Perpindahan Mata-Mata Gadong Mosque has grown alongside the village it serves. But it’s more than just a place of worship. It is a hub for the community. With its playgrounds and the KOPERMATA convenience store, run by local youth, the mosque is an integral part of daily life in Kampong Perpindahan Mata-Mata.
