A whisper of prayer carried on the breeze. It guided me towards the Kampong Junjongan Mosque. Its elegant form stood before me a testament to faith and community.

This isn’t just any mosque. The Kampong Junjongan Mosque holds a special place in the heart of Bandar Seri Begawan. Completed on September 15 1998 it stands as a symbol of devotion. Built on a generous 1.5 acre site it cost BND$60 000. It can accommodate up to 250 worshippers. That’s quite a gathering.

Imagine the scene on that day in 1998. Villagers gathered excitedly. The mosque was finally finished. Years of planning and hard work had paid off. The air hummed with anticipation. The scent of frangipani and the distant sound of the call to prayer filled the air.

The Kampong Junjongan Mosque wasn’t always here. The village itself was once called Kampong Lampaki. Its name changed due to its importance as a trading center. People would come from far and wide. They would exchange goods like salted fish for fruit. It was a vibrant hub of activity. The name Junjongan itself means to be looked up to and respected. This reflects the mosque’s place in the community.

Before the current mosque stood. The early 1930s saw just 13 houses and about 30 people. The villagers worked together. A strong spirit of cooperation guided them. Today that spirit continues. It can be seen in the mosque’s design and function.

Nearby you can find Makam Sharif Alwi. This is the tomb of Sharif Alwi. Legend says he travelled far spreading Islam. He fought Datu Rumbi an invincible man. The fight happened in Kampong Masin. Sadly Sharif Alwi lost his life. His body washed up in the Limau Manis River. He’s remembered as Raja Junjungan for his sacrifice. His story is a testament to the enduring faith of this area.

Today the Kampong Junjongan Mosque provides more than just a place for prayer. It’s a community center. A place where people gather support each other and celebrate their faith. Look around you. See the people coming and going. Hear the peaceful sounds of prayer. Feel the sense of community that fills the air.

Step inside the Kampong Junjongan Mosque and feel the weight of history. Feel the devotion of generations past and present. This mosque is more than just stone and mortar. It is the beating heart of Kampong Junjongan.
