Perhaps it’s the scent of spices in the air that first hints at the unique character of this place. We are now standing at Kampong in Paramaribo. Kampong is more than just a location. It is a testament to the city’s diverse history.

Paramaribo itself is the capital and largest city of Suriname. It sits on the banks of the Suriname River. The city’s story begins long before the Dutch. The Paramaribo tribe lived here. Their name means “large river inhabitants” in Tupi-Guarani.

In 1613, the Dutch established a trading post. This marked the start of European settlement. English and French traders also tried their luck. But these early attempts were short-lived. The English, sent by Lord Francis Willoughby from Barbados, founded Surinam in 1650. They built a town south of today’s center. They also constructed Fort Willoughby to protect it.

The Dutch, under Abraham Crijnssen, captured Paramaribo in 1667 during the Second Anglo-Dutch War. The Treaty of Breda confirmed Dutch control. The fort became Fort Zeelandia. The town was briefly renamed New Middelburg. But the new name didn’t stick.

Paramaribo’s population has always been diverse. Early British settlers included many Jews. The Neveh Shalom Synagogue is one of the oldest in the Americas. After slavery ended in 1863, the city’s population grew. Former enslaved people left plantations. They sought new lives in Paramaribo.

Paramaribo has been Suriname’s capital since colonial times. It continued through independence in 1975. The old town faced devastating fires. Major fires struck in 1821 and 1832. These fires destroyed hundreds of buildings.

The city is located about 15 kilometers inland from the Atlantic Ocean. Paramaribo has a tropical rainforest climate. There is no true dry season. Rainfall is heaviest from April to July. Temperatures remain consistent. Highs average 30 degrees Celsius. Lows average 24 degrees Celsius.

Today, Paramaribo is the business and financial center of Suriname. The city handles most of the country’s export revenue. Gold, oil, bauxite, rice, and tropical wood pass through its institutions. Tourism is also increasingly important. Many visitors come from the Netherlands.

In 2002, UNESCO recognized Paramaribo’s historic inner city as a World Heritage Site. This area showcases Dutch colonial architecture. It also displays a fusion with local techniques and materials.

Notable landmarks include Fort Zeelandia. Also, the Presidential Palace of Suriname. And the Roman Catholic St Peter and St Paul Cathedral. Other sites are the Suriname Mosque. And the National Assembly of Suriname. Also worth seeing are the Neveh Shalom Synagogue. And the Arya Diwaker Hindu Temple. Not to forget the Garden of Palms.

Paramaribo is twinned with cities like Antwerp, Hangzhou, and Willemstad. It also has ties with Yogyakarta and Miami-Dade County.
