Kämpfende Vögel Sculpture

Gazing up at the Kämpfende Vögel Sculpture, one might initially mistake it for abstract art. But look closer. This bronze sculpture, created by Pierre Schumann in 1968 and installed here in Ahrensburg in 1983, depicts two birds locked in a dynamic struggle. The Kämpfende Vögel Sculpture embodies a fleeting moment in nature, a battle for territory, a mate, or perhaps just a tasty morsel. Schumann, a Schleswig-Holstein sculptor, specialized in capturing these difficult-to-observe scenes. He once mused, “I can’t even say how I arrived at this form.” The answer, however, lies in his childhood. Growing up on the west coast of Schleswig-Holstein, Schumann frequently visited Büsum, a place teeming with gulls. These gulls, along with female figures, became central themes in his work. The Kämpfende Vögel Sculpture showcases Schumann’s artistic style. He reduces forms to their essential structures. The result is reminiscent of Cubism, though Schumann himself didn’t adhere strictly to any one style. His artistic influences included Edwin Scharff and Otto Baum, and he even knew Picasso, Miro, and Moore. Moore, in particular, remained a lifelong inspiration. The Kämpfende Vögel Sculpture isn’t unique to Ahrensburg. At least seven bronze casts exist, along with sixty smaller versions measuring just 30 centimeters. These powerful depictions of avian combat can be found in Kiel, Schleswig, Worpswede, Oldenburg, Celle, and even within the artist’s estate. This nearly three-meter-tall sculpture is a testament to Schumann’s artistic vision and skill. He was born in Heide in 1917. After serving in World War II, he studied at the Hamburg University of Fine Arts under Edwin Scharff. He continued his studies at the Stuttgart Art Academy with Otto Baum. Schumann spent many years working in Paris. His pieces now grace museums and collections worldwide. He even exhibited alongside Pablo Picasso, Joan Miro, and Henry Moore. Primarily working with Carrara marble, Schumann also created numerous bronze works. His legacy lives on in the powerful forms of sculptures like the Kämpfende Vögel, a frozen moment of natural drama.
