Why is Kampen called Kampen? Our story begins in the heart of Sylt, with the enigma of a name. Kampen. It echoes with the whispers of history, a name derived from “a marked out field,” a testament to its humble beginnings as a modest village clinging to the edge of the unforgiving North Sea. Imagine Kampen in 1543, a tiny settlement first appearing in tax records, perhaps born from the ashes of a storm-ravaged predecessor. Fast forward to 1767, a time when the resourceful inhabitants, alongside their Landvogt, invested in a venture that would define the area for decades: the Kampener Vogelkoje, a duck decoy. This ingenious creation, operational until 1921, yielded an astounding 695,957 ducks, a testament to the islanders’ ingenuity and connection to the natural world. Kampen in 1803 was a collection of 23 houses and 93 souls, a mix of seafarers and land-dwellers, their lives intertwined with the rhythm of the tides. The reign of King Frederick VII of Denmark brought a beacon of hope in 1853: the Kampen Lighthouse, a sentinel against the stormy seas. By 1864, Kampen, still a small village, became part of Prussia, a shift in power that would shape its destiny. Kampen’s transformation from a quiet agricultural community to a sought-after seaside resort began in the early 20th century. An ordinance of 1912, still in effect today, mandates that all houses retain the traditional charm of brick construction and thatched roofs. This architectural harmony adds to the timeless allure of Kampen. The arrival of the Sylter Nordbahn in 1903 connected Kampen to the wider world, accelerating its rise to prominence. The roar of the train replaced the quiet clip-clop of horses’ hooves, ushering in a new era of tourism. The 1920s saw Kampen blossom into a haven for artists and intellectuals. Drawn by its raw beauty and tranquil atmosphere, luminaries such as Thomas Mann, Max Frisch, and Emil Nolde graced its shores, leaving an indelible mark on the cultural landscape. Haus Kliffende, north of the village, became a hub of creativity, a place where ideas flowed as freely as the North Sea tides. Kampen officially became a municipality in 1927, a testament to its growing importance. The mid-20th century brought new challenges and changes. World War II saw the establishment of military camps in Kampen, though the village itself was spared from direct conflict. Post-war, Kampen became a magnet for the “rich and famous,” a playground for the elite. The Wirtschaftswunder, Germany’s economic miracle, fueled this boom, transforming the village into a symbol of prosperity and glamour. Today, Kampen retains its exclusive allure, a testament to its rich history and enduring charm. From a humble “marked out field” to a haven for artists and the elite, Kampen’s story is as captivating as the dramatic landscape that surrounds it.
