“Did you know this neighbourhood was once a rather respectable place?” our guide whispered, her eyes scanning the bustling street before us. “We are in Kamathipura, a place forever etched in the annals of Mumbai’s complex history.” Kamathipura, she explained, wasn’t always synonymous with the red-light district. It began as a home for mill workers in the 18th century. The Kamathis, construction workers from other parts of India, settled here, lending the area its name. Over time, it morphed into a red-light district, gaining notoriety for its brothels. However, the late 20th century brought a change. The rise of AIDS, coupled with government initiatives, led to a decline in the sex trade. Kamathipura began a slow transformation, with real estate developers moving in and old structures making way for new constructions. While remnants of its past still linger, Kamathipura is now a blend of old and new, a testament to Mumbai’s ever-evolving narrative.
