Have you ever heard the legend of Urvashi the celestial nymph? It’s said her laughter once angered the mighty Indra. He banished her to Earth for twelve years. Here at the Kalyanji Temple in Jaipur you’ll discover how this led to its creation.

The Kalyanji Temple is a place of immense spiritual significance. It’s dedicated to Lord Vishnu in his Kalyanji incarnation. This temple holds a fascinating story within its very stones. It’s more than just a place of worship. It’s a living monument to a king’s devotion.

Urvashi sought refuge at a sage’s ashram. The sage directed her to King Digva in Dhundhar Pradesh. There she lived near his garden appearing as a beautiful horse. King Digva was captivated. He tracked this horse to Chandragiri Hill. There Urvashi revealed her celestial identity and her punishment.

A celestial war ensued. Indra arrived to reclaim Urvashi. King Digva battled Indra bravely. This epic conflict was a sight to behold. Lord Vishnu intervened ending the conflict. King Digva was cursed with leprosy.

Lord Vishnu offered a solution. A statue of Vishnu would appear on the coast. Seeing it would lift the curse. King Digva and a businessman both found the statue. An akashvani decided the statue’s fate. Only the one who could pull it in a chariot while standing where the horses would be could claim it.
