From its humble beginnings as a family home, Kalwit Studio & Gallery has blossomed into a vibrant hub for Thai contemporary art. Kalwit, tucked away in the Wireless Soi 2 (Ruamrudee) area of Bangkok, was once the residence of Thai sketch artist Wal Chirachaisakul and his family. Wal, driven by a vision to create a dedicated space for artistic expression, renovated his home into the gallery and studio you see today. Kalwit quickly became a haven for artists, offering chill-out spaces perfect for meet-ups and collaborations. Kalwit has become known for showcasing the works of emerging Thai contemporary artists. The gallery’s warm and welcoming atmosphere reflects its origins as a family endeavor. It’s a place where artists and art lovers can connect. Kalwit Studio & Gallery’s story began with the Chirachaisakul family’s passion for printmaking. Today, the gallery is run by Kit Chirachaisakul, the youngest son of the artist Wal. The gallery’s mission goes beyond simply displaying art. Kalwit aims to foster inspiration and understanding. They achieve this by sharing the artistic processes behind the works, from painting and street art to toy art and various printmaking techniques, especially intaglio printing. This emphasis on printmaking stems from the family’s deep roots in the art form. Three members of the Chirachaisakul family graduated from the printmaking faculty at the same university. They recognized a gap in the Thai art scene, where digital prints were more widely known than traditional techniques. This fueled their desire to showcase the unique beauty and complexity of printmaking. Kalwit Studio & Gallery distinguishes itself from other Bangkok galleries in several ways. Its cozy ambiance, born from its origins as a family home, creates a welcoming atmosphere. Kalwit is committed to supporting young and emerging artists, providing them with a platform to exhibit their work and gain recognition. Kalwit prioritizes the quality of the artwork. It is not driven by the fame of the artists but rather by a genuine interest in showcasing unique and compelling pieces. Situated in the heart of Bangkok’s Sukhumvit area, Kalwit is described as an “Urban Gallery”. The gallery’s exhibitions often reflect the vibrant ambiance of city life. Each exhibition at Kalwit tells a story. One particularly powerful exhibition was “The Imperfect” in 2019, featuring the work of artist Waruncharat Laaiadsin. This exhibition was designed for blind people, allowing them to experience art through smell and atmosphere. This innovative approach demonstrates Kalwit’s commitment to making art accessible to everyone. Kalwit continues to be a driving force in the Bangkok art scene, bridging the gap between artists and viewers. They champion emerging talents. They offer a space where creativity flourishes and the stories of urban life are brought to life.
