Did you know that Kalø Hovedgård has a fascinating history? Even though it wasn’t always located in the place it stands today, it has always been a focal point of the surrounding area. The main building of Kalø Hovedgård was erected some time in the early 18th century. This was part of a larger project that involved a new manor house for the inspector but also stables and a large barn – all built in timber framing style. You might be surprised to learn that the original Kalø Hovedgård was much closer to the sea and even housed a grand castle at one point. This castle, with its imposing walls, was built by King Erik Menved in 1313 and it was a testament to his power over the Danish people. Unfortunately, the castle was demolished by King Christoffer II and as time went by its remains were used as building materials by the noblemen who owned Kalø Hovedgård. Today, the remnants of this castle still stand on the peninsula and are a testament to the history of power that has passed through this very spot. But it is Kalø Hovedgård itself that truly stands out. It has been owned by numerous people and families over the centuries. One of the most famous owners was Conrad Reventlow who started a tradition of transforming Kalø Hovedgård into a beautiful estate. However, this tradition was interrupted when the Danish state took ownership in 1945. Then, something truly fascinating happened. The main building and hunting lodge became part of the Department of Bioscience at Aarhus University. It seems fitting that after centuries of change and transformation, one of the most important things that remain at Kalø Hovedgård is the pursuit of knowledge and exploration of nature. Today, the building stands as a quiet reminder of the people and events that unfolded here over the centuries.
