A whisper of ancient legends. A scent of incense thick in the air. This is Kalighat. Right here before you stands a temple steeped in history. A place where devotion and mystery intertwine.

Kalighat a locality in Kolkata is more than just a neighbourhood. It’s a pilgrimage site. A significant Shakti Peetha. It is believed that the toes of Sati’s right foot fell here. This event is central to Hindu mythology. This makes Kalighat one of 51 sacred locations.

The Kalighat Kali Temple as it stands today is relatively recent. It was built around 1809. The Sabarna Roy Choudhury family played a key role in its construction. They donated land to ensure the temple’s smooth functioning. However its origins stretch far back. References appear in 15th-century texts. The original temple was humble. A simple hut dedicated to the goddess Kali. Some scholars even believe Calcutta’s name originates from Kalighat. Traders would stop there to honour the goddess. The river Hooghly once flowed closer. Now the temple sits beside the Adi Ganga a canal.

A fascinating piece of Kalighat’s history involves a remarkable treasure. In 1783 a fisherman discovered a hoard of over 200 gold coins. He unknowingly unearthed Gupta coins. These ancient coins represented India’s glorious past. The fisherman sold his find to Raja Nabakrishna Deb. Deb gifted them to Warren Hastings. Hastings sent some to London. Many were melted down. Their true significance wasn’t recognized until much later. The hoard is now considered the largest collection of Gupta coins ever found.

The Kalighat Kali Temple is also famous for its distinct style of painting. Kalighat pata paintings emerged in the 19th century. They feature bold lines and bright colors. The paintings often depict everyday life. They also show satirical scenes. These images offer a glimpse into the lives of people during British colonial times.

Kalighat’s story is multifaceted. It blends religious devotion ancient lore and a unique artistic tradition. The temple stands as a testament to the rich cultural heritage of Kolkata. This is more than a temple. This is a living history.
