Ever wondered what it’s like to walk a bridge born from industry and reborn from destruction? That is the Kaisersteg. This isn’t just a bridge. It is a symbol of Berlin’s resilience and ingenuity.
The Kaisersteg emerged from a partnership. The Wilhelminenhof land company and AEG, a powerful industrial firm joined forces. Emil Rathenau, AEG’s CEO, sought new locations. His factories in Moabit and Gesundbrunnen were bursting. He found land on the Oberspree in Oberschöneweide in 1895.
The river offered ample water for steam turbines. The location was perfect for shipping. A railway connected it to Berlin-Görlitz. AEG built its cable factory and Oberspree power plant by 1897. It supplied electricity to eastern Berlin. The Wilhelminenhof company offered AEG land for free. They hoped to attract more businesses.
Both companies needed a footbridge. The Kaisersteg shortened the workers’ commute to Berlin-Schöneweide station. It saved them a 1.5 km detour. The land company increased the value of its properties.
Finding the right location was hard. The Niederschöneweide bank was already built up. The Spree was wide and curved. Steamers to Wilhelminenhof and Hasselwerder were nearby. Navigation needs had to be considered. Carl Deul, the land company director, drafted a design. It featured a five-arch bridge. The central span needed to be 7.70 meters above the water. This would spare pedestrians from steamer smoke. The opening needed to be 40 meters wide.
Heinrich Müller-Breslau, an engineer, designed the Kaisersteg. Karl Bernhard assisted with calculations. Müller-Breslau wanted the design to complement the river. His design surpassed all requirements. It became a prime example of engineering. The central span was 86 meters. It offered a view of the Spree. The bridge’s pillars only took up two percent of the river’s width.
Holzmann & Co. built the pillars. The sandy ground allowed for simple foundations. The pillars were made of clinker brick. Silesian granite faced the pillars. Bricks from Sauen near Eberswalde covered the sides. The pillars narrowed to support the bridge. Construction finished in the autumn of 1897.
August Klönne from Dortmund built the iron structure. Workers assembled the bridge on the Oberschöneweide bank. They used two pontoons to install the sections. Cranes lifted the pieces into place. Removing the supports allowed the pontoons to pass.
The Kaisersteg’s clearance was 4.10 meters above the water. It reached 9 meters in the center. Steps with 1.20-meter treads connected the bridge to the banks.
The portals had Gothic designs. These included finials, battlements, and imperial eagles. Electrical cables ran inside the bridge. AEG installed electric lighting.
The bridge opened to the factory workers on October 1, 1898. Oberschöneweide took ownership in November 1898. The cost was 110,000 gold marks. Its importance earned it the name Kaisersteg.
On April 22, 1945, SS units blew up the Kaisersteg. They aimed to slow the Red Army. The industrial area lost a symbol. While the Treskow Bridge was rebuilt quickly, Kaisersteg’s remains were cleared away.
In the 1950s, there were plans to rebuild the Kaisersteg. But nothing happened. After reunification, the state-owned factories were privatized. Most closed quickly. The area became an industrial wasteland. Plans emerged to rebuild the Kaisersteg. It would reconnect Oberschöneweide and Niederschöneweide. Schmitt Stumpf Frühauf won the design competition.
The new bridge is 140.3 meters long and weighs 400 tons. It is a cable-stayed bridge with a 5-meter walkway. The 32-meter pylons hold the cables. The pylons were changed to an A-shape for stability. The project cost four million euros. The European Union funded 75 percent. Berlin contributed 16.67 percent. Germany paid 8.22 percent.
Construction began in November 2005. The bridge and pylons arrived by water. A floating crane lifted the pylons on June 4, 2007. The bridge segments followed on June 6 and 7. The Kaisersteg reopened on September 25, 2007.
The Kaisersteg helps residents reach shops and recreation. It shortens the commute to Berlin-Schöneweide station for students. The bridge sees heavy bicycle traffic. The Kaisersteg stands as a testament to Berlin’s past. It also points to its future.
