Standing here, in front of the Kaiserin-Elisabeth-Denkmal, it’s easy to forget the intricate history of this beloved statue. Though the Habsburgs played a minor role in Salzburg, this marble statue of Empress Elisabeth is a cherished monument to the popular Sisi. The statue, crafted by Edmund Hellmer, was unveiled in 1901, in the park of the former Grand Hotel de l’Europe, across from the Staatsbahnhof (today’s Salzburg Main Station). This event was attended by Emperor Franz Joseph himself. To honour the empress, who was assassinated in 1898, the surrounding city district was renamed “Elisabeth-Vorstadt”. This dignified tribute highlights the deep affection that the people of Salzburg held for the empress. The monument was moved to the grounds of Hellbrunn Palace in 1925, where it stayed until 2002, when it was returned to its original location. The statue of Elisabeth is made from Lasa marble, while the round plinth is made of reddish Salzburg marble. Her head is crowned by a delicate garland of edelweiss. Engraved on the plinth is a poem by the Moravian-Austrian writer Marie von Ebner-Eschenbach.
