“Services dwindling” how does that sound for a start? Here at the Kahnawake Service Centre, change is constant.

The Kahnawake Service Centre is a vital point. It serves the Kahnawake community. But things are in flux. It’s important to understand the history and the current situation.

This centre used to be the place to go. Need a new band card? This was your spot. But as of 2025, that service is moving downtown to Montreal.

Imagine being a Kahnawa’kehró:non without a car. What about elders on fixed incomes? Getting to Montreal becomes a real burden. The Kahnawake Service Centre move creates delays and traffic issues for many.

Why the change? ISC, Indigenous Services Canada, says it wants to streamline and save money. Some suggest that the rent was too high. Others point to the building’s decrepit state.

The building had mould issues. Only a few employees remained. Services dwindled over the years.

Community members have mixed feelings. Some say, “It’s about time.” Others realize how convenient it was to have the service here. One community member, Satehoronies, said, “We finally had convenience for all and just like everything good around here, it’s stripped away.”

The Mohawk Council of Kahnawake is not happy. They are exploring options to keep some services local, especially for those on the Kanien’kehá:ka of Kahnawake Registry.

The council worries about data. ISC currently collects and stores data on community members. The MCK has access to this data now. But they will lose access once the building is demolished.

ISC wasn’t interested in finding another building in Kahnawake. They wanted to move no matter what.

The Kahnawake Service Centre, located at 177 River Road, remains a contact point. You can still call 1-800-263-5592 for information. The centre operates Monday to Friday. Service hours are 9 am to 12 pm and 1 pm to 3:30 pm Eastern time.

The Kahnawake Service Centre is more than just a building. It represents a link between the community and government services. While some services are moving, the centre’s role in the community remains important. The Kahnawake Service Centre still offers services. It includes helping people register under the Indian Act and apply for a status card. You can also contact Public enquiries for assistance. The centre also connects individuals with other services such as the Kahnawake Shakotiiatakehnhas Community Services. They provide psychological support, youth programs, and senior services.

As we stand here, remember that this Kahnawake Service Centre signifies resilience. It embodies adaptation in the face of change for the Kahnawake community.
