Guarding Beijing’s northern approach, the Juyong Pass Great Wall stands as a testament to China’s enduring strength. This isn’t just a wall. It’s a story etched in stone. Juyong Pass is one of the most famous and well-preserved sections of the Great Wall.

Imagine yourself transported back to the Northern Qi Dynasty. It was between 550 and 577 AD. This strategic pass first took shape. Later, the Ming Dynasty restored and expanded it. For over 1000 years, Juyong Pass served as a vital military stronghold.

Located about 60 kilometers from Beijing, Juyong Pass sits between Guanmen Mountain and Jundu Mountain. Its 4-kilometer length boasts 22 watchtowers. These once guarded against enemy attacks. Structures like the Cloud Platform, Gate of Clouds, and Jade Gate add to its historical significance.

Juyong Pass isn’t just a military site. It holds immense cultural value. Throughout history, many famous battles took place here. Countless poems and novels mention this strategic location.

The most recent renovation occurred in 2007. Workers repaired the wall, watchtowers, and gates. These efforts ensure that Juyong Pass remains for future generations.

Today, Juyong Pass Great Wall attracts thousands of tourists. Visitors can climb the wall. They can explore the various structures. Breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains and valleys await them.

In 1987, UNESCO recognized its importance. Juyong Pass became a World Heritage Site as part of the Great Wall of China. The Chinese government protects the pass. They limit the number of visitors. They implement conservation measures.

Juyong Pass ranks as one of the three impregnable passes along the Great Wall. The others are Jiayuguan Pass and Shanhaiguan Pass. Many old buildings like towers and temples dot the landscape.

The west side stairs are steep. The east side stairs are gentler. This design enables both energetic adventurers and families to find a suitable route. Compared to Badaling and Mutianyu, Juyong Pass attracts fewer tourists. Enjoy a quieter visit.

The mountain to the east is Cuiping Mountain. It has 1,500 meters of wall on its ridges. To the west, Jingui Mountain features 1,200 meters of wall. The walls on the two mountains look like giant arms cradling the buildings of the valley.

The pass is roughly circular. Its perimeter is about 4,142 meters long. The widest point of the wall is 16.7 meters. The narrowest measures only 1.2 meters.

Two gates stand tall. One in the south and the other in the north. They are called Nan Guan and Bei Guan. Two high watchtowers were built at each gate.

Juyong Pass is known as the “First Pass under Heaven.” It was once the most difficult place for ancient soldiers to guard. Standing at 32 meters high and having three layers, its solid structure made it an indispensable fortress. It symbolizes the tenacity of ancient China’s defense system.

The best times to visit Juyongguan are April, May, September, and October. In April and May, the green mountains are dotted with beautiful flowers. In autumn, the flamboyant leaves form another highlight.

As you stand here at Juyong Pass, remember its history. Remember its cultural value. Remember the countless people who contributed to its legacy. It is a symbol of China’s enduring spirit.
