Here it stands a testament to Potsdam’s industrial past the Jute-Lofts. This striking brick building before you was once the heart of Potsdam’s first industrial spinning mill. It is located on the banks of the Nuthe in the Nowawes district.

The Jute-Lofts building dates back to 1863. Brothers Julius and L. Robert Arntz and Carl Mathias and Carl Otto Busch founded the mill in 1862. They aimed to transform textile production from home work to industrial methods.

Look at the building’s facade. Notice the yellow brickwork and the two stair towers. These features give the Jute-Lofts the appearance of a castle. This style was popular around 1830. It reflects the era’s pride in technology and economic progress. The design is reminiscent of English architecture. It is similar to Babelsberg Palace.

Imagine barges arriving directly at the factory. They came from Hamburg. They transported raw jute from America, India, and Russia via the Elbe, Oder, and Havel rivers. The Arntz brothers processed the jute into yarns, sacks, and fabrics right here.

The Jute-Lofts became the second-largest jute mill in the German Reich by 1887. It housed 327 looms. The mill faced economic difficulties and was sold in 1932. Air raids in 1945 destroyed much of the site, but the original factory building survived.

During the DDR era, the area was partially rebuilt with apartment blocks. The old spinning mill served as a warehouse for cosmetics.

After German reunification, the Jute-Lofts stood empty for years. Most of the former jute mill buildings were demolished in 2006, except for the 1863 factory building and the Arntz villa.

Today, the Jute-Lofts have been transformed into modern apartments. The historical building has been renovated. It combines contemporary living with the charm of a listed industrial palace. The Jute-Lofts offer a unique living experience. They are surrounded by greenery near the Nuthe River, Babelsberg Park, and the city center.

Peter Schube, an architect from Magdeburg, planned the renovation. Terraplan from Nuremberg managed the sales. The Jute-Lofts now stand as a symbol of Potsdam’s blend of history and modernity. They are a reminder of the city’s industrial heritage. They also represent its vibrant present.
