Across the Ihme River stands the Justus-Garten-Brücke. A slender steel structure it gracefully connects Calenberger Neustadt and Linden-Nord. Built in 1980 this bridge replaced an older ferry system.

Before the Justus-Garten-Brücke existed there was a ferry. This ferry transported people goods and even animals across the river. Imagine chickens goats and bicycles all sharing a small boat. The ferry operated near a popular 20th-century excursion restaurant the Justus Garten. This restaurant was so beloved that the bridge was named in its honor.

The ferry’s popularity was immense. At its peak it carried nearly 2500 passengers daily. This was in 1921. Workers from the Linden factories heavily relied on this river crossing. After the Justus Garten was destroyed during World War II the ferry’s popularity waned. It ceased operation in the 1950s.

Today the Justus-Garten-Brücke serves pedestrians and cyclists. It is a symbol of Hannover’s history. The bridge is a reminder of the bustling ferry crossing and the beloved Justus Garten. It stands as a testament to how Hannover has transformed over time.

Near the Justus-Garten-Brücke sits the site of the annual Fährmannsfest. This open-air festival commemorates the old ferry. It features live music cultural events and children’s activities. Over 15000 people attend each year. This lively festival keeps the memory of the old ferry alive. It also helps to celebrate the river and the city’s rich heritage. The Justus-Garten-Brücke continues to connect communities and history.
