Did that impressive building just whisper “justice”? Don’t worry, your ears aren’t playing tricks on you. This is Justizanstalt Salzburg, a modern judicial prison located in Puch bei Hallein. Justizanstalt Salzburg handles pre-trial detentions and sentences of up to 18 months. Before moving to this modern facility in 2015, Justizanstalt Salzburg resided in the heart of Salzburg’s old town for over a century. The old prison, often referred to as “Schanzlalm,” shared a building with the regional court at Kajetanerplatz. The move to Puch was a long time coming. Plans to relocate the prison began in the early 2000s due to the old building’s need for renovation and its central location. The construction of the new facility faced some delays, including a neighbor’s objection, which thankfully was later dismissed. The building itself, designed by the German architectural firm BDA Poos Isensee from Hanover, boasts a capacity of 227 inmates and 60 staff. Justizanstalt Salzburg stands as a testament to the ever-evolving approach to justice and rehabilitation in Austria.
