Twelve and a half meters tall. That’s the impressive height of the Mainz Jupitersäule. Imagine this colossal monument standing proudly in Roman Mogontiacum. The Jupitersäule a testament to Roman power and the prosperity of Mainz’s civilian settlement.
The Jupitersäule wasn’t just any column. Erected in the latter half of the 1st century AD it’s the oldest largest and most elaborate Jupiter column in any German-speaking region. This magnificent structure served as a model for similar monuments throughout Germania. Local Celtic craftsmen likely sculpted it. The column’s two-tiered base supports five drums. They narrow slightly as they ascend. Twenty-eight deities from Roman Celtic mythology adorn its surface. Atop this impressive column stood a statue of Jupiter.
Financed by the residents of a vicus a civilian settlement near the Rhine the Jupitersäule’s construction was a community effort. A dedicatory inscription honors Emperor Nero. It also names the two curators responsible for its consecration Quintus Iulius Priscus and Quintus Iulius Auctus. The Jupitersäule originally stood as a symbol of Mainz’s flourishing community.
Sadly the Jupitersäule was destroyed during the late Roman Empire. Its fragments lay hidden for centuries. Then in 1904-1905 its remains were rediscovered. Today you can see them at the State Museum of Mainz. Copies of the Jupitersäule stand in other locations like Saalburg Castle Saint-Germain-en-Laye and even Rome. These copies ensure its historical significance endures. The Mainz Jupitersäule continues to be an important historical symbol. Its intricate details tell a captivating story.
