Did Junipero Serra High School always welcome both Cavaliers and Lady Cavaliers? No. Established in 1950 by Cardinal McIntyre and the Marianists, Junipero Serra High School initially served only boys. This all changed in 1991 when girls were admitted for the first time, marking a significant shift in the school’s history. Junipero Serra High School, a private, Roman Catholic institution in Gardena, California, is named after Saint Junípero Serra, a Franciscan friar who founded missions throughout California. The school’s motto, “You Shall Be My Witnesses,” reflects its commitment to faith-based education. Almost every Junipero Serra High School graduate pursues higher education. The 2020 graduating class boasted a 100% college acceptance rate, with 95.7% going to four-year institutions. The school offers 12 dual college credit courses in partnership with El Camino College. This gives students a head start on their college careers. Junipero Serra High School also excels in athletics. They have won an impressive twelve California State team titles in basketball, football, and track and field. In the 2009-2010 school year, they achieved a historic double, winning state titles in both football and basketball. This earned them the prestigious Cal-Hi Sports “State School of the Year” award, a first for a school of its size. The campus sits on 24 acres. It includes the Kretschmar Stadium for football and track and field events, and the Dwan D. Hurt Memorial Gymnasium for basketball. The gymnasium is named after Dwan Hurt, a Serra alumnus and basketball star who tragically passed away in 2016. From Arabian Prince, a former member of N.W.A., to Dana Gioia, a former chairman of the National Endowment for the Arts, Junipero Serra High School has nurtured numerous notable alumni. The school’s diverse student body, representing over 30 zip codes in Los Angeles County, contributes to a vibrant learning environment.
