The Junebäcken, once called Junebäck, is a small river in Jönköping. Its name is believed to be the origin of the city’s name. “Jön” comes from “Jun”. “Köping” means trading center or marketplace. The creek acted as a border between Tveta and Mo districts. “Iun” means “constantly flowing” or “never-ending”.
The Junebäcken played a role in the medieval Eriksgata. This was a traditional journey for newly elected Swedish kings. The Äldre Västgötalagen, dating back to around 1220, mentions Junebäcken. At Junebäcken, escorts and hostages were exchanged. They passed from Östergötland to Västergötland, and later from Småland to Västergötland. The creek’s outlet into Vättern marked the Eriksgata’s southern point.
The Junebäcken starts near Åsens gård in Sandseryd. It is about three kilometers southwest of Jönköping. The source lies between 220 and 225 meters above sea level. It used to flow into Vättern at Talavid. This is near where Vättern meets Juneleden.
After a cholera outbreak in 1834, Jönköping built its first water plant in 1864. It was located at Åsen farm. Three infiltration dams were built south of Åsen. Åsendammen served as a water reservoir for the city. It replaced Vättern as the source of drinking water. The railway’s construction made Vättern harder to access.
The tapping of the Junebäcken nearly dried it up. The remaining water became stagnant. This caused unsanitary conditions. As a result, the culverting of the creek became a topic of discussion in the early 1900s.
In the 1930s, the debate about culverting continued. The economic depression led to public works projects. One such project was the construction of Jönköping Airport. Cleaning up Junebäcken became another project.
In 1933, riksantikvarie Sigurd Curman intervened. He helped create a compromise. The creek would remain open for 100 meters south of Västra Storgatan. A park and memorial would honor the creek’s historical significance.
The park was designed by Göran Pauli and John Lundqvist. It was completed in 1946. John Lundqvist created the Junebäcksmonumentet. The bronze sculpture depicts a medieval king on his Eriksgata. He is greeted by commoners and hostages at Junebäcken.
Today, a 3.5-kilometer park stretches along the Junebäcken. It runs from Vattenledningsparken to Talavid. The creek flows along Dalagatan before entering a culvert. It reappears in Friaredalen. Then, it flows into Vättern.
In 1940, the Vättern treatment plant was inaugurated. It addressed pollution in Vättern. Before, sewage was pumped untreated into the lake. The plant was mainly underground. Göran Pauli designed the above-ground building. The building and plant were demolished in 2012. A new wastewater treatment plant has been built in the former Junebäcksparken. In the 1980s, the Junebäcksmonumentet was moved to the east side of Junegatan.
