Construction of the Grand Mosque took place between 1994 and 2007. It officially opened in December 2007. The complex covers over 30 acres. The main axis aligns towards the Kaaba in Mecca.
Sheikh Zayed launched the project. He sought to unite Islamic cultural diversity. He wanted to blend historical and modern architectural values. Sheikh Zayed was buried in the mosque’s courtyard in 2004.
The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque Center manages daily operations. It serves as a learning center. The library holds classic books in multiple languages. These include Arabic, English and French.

The Jumma Mosque can accommodate over 40100 worshippers. The main prayer hall holds over 7000. There are four minarets that rise about 351 feet. The courtyard is the largest example of marble mosaic. The marble is inlaid with precious stones.
The carpet in the hall is the world’s largest. Iranian artist Ali Khaliqi designed it. It measures 60570 square feet. Around 1200-1300 carpet knotters made it. The carpet weighs 35 tons.
The Grand Mosque has seven imported chandeliers. These incorporate millions of Swarovski crystals. The largest chandelier is the second largest inside a mosque. It has a 33-foot diameter. It has a 49-foot height.
Pools reflect the mosque’s columns. The lighting system reflects the phases of the moon. Bluish gray clouds are projected onto the external walls.
The 96 columns in the main prayer hall are clad with marble. They are inlaid with mother of pearl. The Qibla wall features the 99 names of God. Mohammed Mandi Al Tamimi designed the Kufic calligraphy.
Three calligraphy styles are used. These are Naskhi, Thuluth and Kufic.
