During World War I, Leber served in the German Army. He showed great bravery and was wounded twice. By the war’s end, he had achieved the rank of second lieutenant.

Leber’s commitment to justice was unwavering. In 1920, he helped suppress the Kapp Putsch in Berlin. This was a failed coup against the Weimar Republic.

In the following years, Julius Leber became a leading voice against Adolf Hitler. He warned against the Nazi Party’s growing influence. After Hitler’s rise to power in 1933, Leber was arrested. The Nazis saw him as a threat. He was sent to concentration camps.

Released in 1937, Leber immediately rejoined the resistance. He worked with other brave individuals. They sought to overthrow Hitler’s regime. Among them were Adolf Reichwein and Claus von Stauffenberg.

Julius Leber’s resistance work was dangerous. On July 4, 1944, he was arrested. The Gestapo tortured him for two months. Leber refused to betray his comrades. He never confessed to involvement in the July Plot. This was the failed assassination attempt on Hitler.

Julius Leber was found guilty. He was executed on January 5, 1945. His life was a testament to courage.

Willy Brandt described Julius Leber as a wonderful and active man. Brandt admired Leber’s conviction to fight for what was right. Leber accepted the ultimate consequence: giving his life for his beliefs.

Annedore Leber, Julius’s wife, continued his legacy. She ran the family’s coal business after his death. She also founded a publishing house. It printed important works on resistance against National Socialism. This was against the zeitgeist of the time.
