Amidst the urban hustle of Brussels, a poignant narrative unfolds at the Jules Rühl Statue. This unassuming monument, crafted from stone, immortalizes a man who dedicated his life to the voiceless. Jules Rühl, a Belgian champion of animal welfare, stands frozen in time, a dog by his side. The Jules Rühl Statue isn’t just a sculpture. It’s a testament to compassion, a tribute to a life poured into alleviating animal suffering. Jules Rühl, born in 1864, wasn’t just a sentimentalist. He was a scientist, a Doctor of Natural Sciences, who channeled his knowledge and resources into tangible action. In 1897, he founded the Brussels Society Against Cruelty to Animals, marking a pivotal moment in Belgian animal welfare history. Later, in 1908, he established Veeweyde, Belgium’s first shelter for abandoned animals. This haven, initially located on Rue de Veeweyde in Anderlecht, became synonymous with Rühl’s name, affectionately known as “Asile Jules Ruhl.” The Jules Rühl Statue captures not only his love for animals but also his broader humanitarian spirit. Rühl advocated for improved working conditions in slaughterhouses, even designing a more humane pistol for livestock. He didn’t shy away from difficult conversations. He pushed for the use of anesthetics and humane killers, challenging the status quo. His efforts culminated in 1929 with the implementation of Belgium’s first animal protection law. Tragically, his life was cut short in 1936. A fatal accident at Gare du Midi, while overseeing the transport of horses to Paris, ended his earthly mission. The Jules Rühl Statue, sculpted by Pierre Theunis, serves as a poignant reminder. Located near Veeweyde’s original location, it depicts Rühl with a loyal canine companion. It stands as a symbol of his unwavering dedication, inviting us to reflect on our own relationship with the animal kingdom. This isn’t just a statue. It’s a call to action, a whisper of compassion echoing across the bustling city.
