Amidst the vibrant tapestry of Delhi, the Julelal Temple stands as a beacon of faith for the Sindhi community. The Julelal Temple, established on October 12, 1967, near the Moti Nagar metro station, serves as a spiritual and cultural hub. The temple is dedicated to Jhulelal, also known as Uderolal, Lal Sai, Varun Dev, Zinda Pir, Doolhalal, and Dariyalal. He is revered as the Ishta Dev, the community god, of the Sindhi people. Jhulelal is a unifying figure, deeply connected to the Indus River, from which the name “Sindhi” originates. A fascinating aspect of Jhulelal is the intertwining of Hindu and Islamic traditions in his legends. Sindhi Hindus consider him an incarnation of the Hindu god Varuna. An interesting tradition is the Chandra Darshan festival, celebrated at the Julelal Temple in Shalimar Bagh on the Shukla Pratipada of each month. When Sindhi men journey out to sea, their wives pray to Jhulelal for their safe return, offering a sweet called “akha” made from rice, ghee, sugar, and flour. The Sindhi community’s faith in Jhulelal is palpable, evident in their greeting, “Jhulelal Bera-Hee-Paar,” meaning “Jhulelal will take you across safely.”
