Curious how Jugyo-dong got its name? This vibrant neighborhood in Seoul has an interesting story to tell. Jugyo-dong is a legal dong in Jung District. It is managed by the administrative dong, Euljiro 3, 4, and 5ga-dong.

Jugyo-dong’s name comes from its history. The name jugyo-ri first appeared during the Joseon Dynasty. According to the story, a big flood in 1925 washed a boat into the village. Another idea is that the village’s shape looks like a ship. So, jugyo-dong means “Baedari” in Chinese characters. There is also a natural village called Witbaedari using the Korean word for boat.

Before the Han River embankment was built in the 1930s, a river flowed to the Han River in front of Jugyo-dong. The area is mostly hills with a gentle slope. It is now a development restricted area. In 1979, it became Jugyo-ri, Wondang-eup. In 1992, it became an administrative dong. This included both Jugyo-dong and Seongsa-dong. Since 1996, Deokyang-gu has managed the area. Wondang-myeon, Wondang-eup, and Wondang-gun have been important local administration centers since 1914.
