The Jugendarrestanstalt Berlin-Brandenburg wasn’t always here. Its journey began much earlier. The first juvenile detention order in Germany was issued in 1940. Initially male detainees were held in Lichterfelde. Female detainees were held in Charlottenburg. The location shifted during World War II. After the war the Fichtebunker served as a temporary facility. Then from 1977 to 1988 the facility was in Tiergarten. A move to Neukölln followed. The institution finally settled in Lichtenrade in 1995. However it moved again in 2012. It’s been on its current site since 2021.

Each cell has a bed a chair a wardrobe and a small bathroom. Detainees are responsible for cleaning their own cells. The facility itself offers various amenities. These include kitchens group rooms TV rooms and shower rooms. There’s even a workshop a library and sports facilities. These are designed to contribute to the rehabilitation process. The Jugendarrestanstalt aims to be more than just a place of detention. It’s meant to be a place of rehabilitation.
