Hidden amongst the fields near Berger Warte lies the Jüdischer Friedhof Bergen II. It’s a place that whispers stories of Frankfurt’s Jewish community. Jüdischer Friedhof Bergen II is a small, poignant reminder of a community’s resilience and loss. Established in 1925 along the Vilbeler Landstraße, Jüdischer Friedhof Bergen II served the Jewish community of Bergen-Enkheim. This was after the older cemetery, located near Am Weißen Turm, reached its capacity. The new Jüdischer Friedhof Bergen II was active until the tragic end of the Bergen-Enkheim Jewish community in 1942. Today, only about ten gravestones remain from this period, marking the final resting places of those laid to rest before the community’s dissolution. It’s a small space, only about 180 square meters enclosed within the larger 530 square meter plot. This makes Jüdischer Friedhof Bergen II one of Frankfurt’s smallest Jewish cemeteries. Owned by the Landesverband der Jüdischen Gemeinden in Hessen, the Jüdischer Friedhof Bergen II holds a quiet dignity. Despite its size, it offers a profound glimpse into the lives touched by history. It’s a place where the past speaks volumes in the hushed reverence of the present.
