Three hundred souls rest here. Their silent stones whisper tales of tragedy. Welcome to the Jewish Cemetery in Görlitz.

This cemetery isn’t just a resting place. It’s a living testament to a community. Established in 1849 a Jewish community thrived in Görlitz. The first burial took place in 1852. The cemetery expanded in 1860 to 4683 square meters. Even after 1945 isolated burials continued here.

Notice the grandeur of the gravestones. Many are imposing almost crypt-like. Unlike other Jewish cemeteries in Saxony. These aren’t the original stones from 1849. The transformation into a large park-like cemetery in the 1860s is evident. The central area between the entrance and the old cemetery hall showcases impressive grave monuments. These reflect the wealth of those buried there.

Look to the southern corner. There you’ll see a memorial stone. It marks mass graves for over 300 victims. These were victims of the nearby Biesnitzer Grund concentration camp. A sobering reminder of the Nazi persecution. A plaque at the entrance states that 323 inmates of the concentration camp found their final resting place here. They were murdered by the SS between 1943 and 1945.

In 2015 seven iron stelae were added. They bear the names and dates of 148 more victims of the Görlitz subcamp. The cemetery’s survival through the Nazi era and its current state make it an impressive monument. A place of remembrance. A place where the stories of outstanding personalities and entrepreneurs of Görlitz’s Gründerzeit era are interwoven with those of the persecuted and murdered.

The cemetery hall dating from the 19th century still stands. Restored around 1990. The surrounding wall was repaired in 2010. Funded by the Altstadtmillion initiative. The Jewish Cemetery in Görlitz. A place of peace. A place of remembrance. A place of history.
