Does the silence here speak louder than words? This is the Jüdischer Friedhof in Freiburg. It is a place of rest, remembrance, and history. It is a testament to the enduring Jewish community of Freiburg.

Established in 1870, the Jüdischer Friedhof became a sanctuary. For centuries, Jews were barred from Freiburg. This changed in the 19th century. The Jewish community grew. They needed a dedicated space for burials. The Jüdischer Friedhof was created at the corner of Elsässer Straße and Rosbaumweg.

The Jüdischer Friedhof tells a story. It tells a story of integration and loss. Over 900 gravestones stand here. These stones are called Mazevot. The inscriptions are in Hebrew and German. They reveal family histories and changing times.

Early gravestones feature Hebrew. They include the deceased’s Hebrew and German names. Later stones show less Hebrew. Some stones from the Nazi era only have names and dates.

Pause for a moment at the war memorial. It honors Jewish members of the community. They fell during World War I. A second memorial commemorates victims of the Nazi regime. The inscription reads: “To the Jewish Victims of Tyranny 1933-1945.” It is in Hebrew and German.

Notice the Friedhofshalle or cemetery hall. The original hall was destroyed by the Nazis in 1938. The current hall was built between 1949 and 1952. The city of Freiburg financed its construction.

Here lies Gustav Weil. He was an Orientalist and translator of “One Thousand and One Nights.” Weil was Germany’s first Jewish professor. Before him, Jewish academics had to convert to Christianity.

Consider Eduard Salomon’s story. He was a medical student. He died in a duel in 1890. His opponent ended up in the university jail.

The Jüdischer Friedhof demonstrates Jewish tradition. Jewish graves are permanent. They are not cleared after a certain period. The cemetery reached its capacity. Burials now happen in exceptional cases only.

Look around at the newer graves. Some have Cyrillic inscriptions. These reflect more recent Jewish immigrants from Russia. They came from Kazakhstan and other former Soviet republics.

The Jüdischer Friedhof is more than a burial ground. It is a chronicle of Freiburg’s Jewish community. It reflects their joys and sorrows. It shows their contributions and persecution. It stands as a reminder of the past. It shows a commitment to remember. It is a place where stories are etched in stone. These stories echo through time.
