“We chose Hannover as the home for our Bukharian families” These words from Juhanan Motaev echo through the years. They speak of a decision that led to the creation of something extraordinary the Juedisch-Bucharisch-Sefardisches Zentrum in Hanover.
Right here before us stands this vibrant center a testament to the resilience and faith of the Bukharian Jewish community. It’s more than just a building. It’s a living legacy. It’s a story etched in the stones of a former Evangelical church now transformed into a synagogue a youth center a daycare and classrooms for kosher cooking.
Fifteen years ago this community established its first center in all of Germany. It began with around 200 families arriving in the mid-1990s after the collapse of the Soviet Union. Their roots stretch back to the Asian part of the former Soviet Union. They brought with them a rich cultural heritage a unique language a persic-tadjik dialect written in Hebrew letters and unwavering traditions.
Despite numbering only about 1200 in all of Germany compared to around 120000 other Jews this community in Hanover is strong and growing. Nearly 300 members live in the city and surrounding area. They are fiercely proud of their traditions their language and their unique identity. Their traditions are strong although some things have changed to reflect the times. For example Ever Motaev the son of Juhanan and a board member speaks both Russian and German with his family.
The community’s commitment to their traditions is clear. They celebrate Jewish holidays. They hold regular prayer services. This is all made possible within their own center. Their success hasn’t gone unnoticed. Many dignitaries attended their 15th anniversary celebration praising their achievements and their vibrant communal life.
The JBSZD in Hanover is not isolated. They maintain constant contact with other Bukharian Jewish communities around the globe. They share news and maintain a focus on their future. They have ambitious plans. They want to build a mikveh a large event hall and most importantly a Jewish school.
The growth of the community has been remarkable. They are a vibrant reminder of the enduring spirit of Judaism. The Juedisch-Bucharisch-Sefardisches Zentrum is a beacon of hope and tradition a testament to the power of community and faith.
