Marvelous isn’t it? This is the Jröne Jong. Right here in the heart of Düsseldorf’s Hofgarten.

The Jröne Jong isn’t just any sculpture. It’s a Düsseldorf icon a whimsical masterpiece carved from French limestone. Created between 1899 and 1900 by Joseph Hammerschmidt it depicts Triton the sea god surprised during his meal by a hippopotamus. Water spouts from the hippo’s open mouth creating a stunning fountain.

This wasn’t always called the Jröne Jong. Originally titled ‘Das gestörte Frühstück’ or ‘The Uninvited Guest’ the name changed. Years of exposure to the elements caused algae and moss to grow covering the sculpture in a green hue. This gave it its endearing nickname Jröne Jong meaning ‘green boy’ in the local dialect.

The sculpture’s creation wasn’t without controversy. One city official criticized its design calling it ‘ugly’ and complaining the fountain obstructed the view of Schloss Jägerhof. Despite the criticism the Jröne Jong became a beloved local landmark.

The Jröne Jong’s history extends beyond its creation. World War II damaged the sculpture requiring significant reconstruction in 1951 by Hermann Isenmann. The surrounding Round Pond was also restored. Today the sculpture and fountain are a protected monument.

Even today the Jröne Jong continues its fascinating story. In 2013 a temporary light and water installation added to the scene enhanced its beauty. It stands as a testament to Düsseldorf’s history and its blend of art nature and local charm. This is more than just a sculpture. It’s a living piece of Düsseldorf history. So let’s admire its unique character. Its charming story continues to be told.
