Slipping beneath the modern cityscape, the JR Fukuchiyama Line’s Old Uori Line whispers tales of a bygone era. This abandoned branch line, once a vital artery of the JR Fukuchiyama Line, now lies dormant, a hidden thread in Osaka’s vibrant tapestry. The JR Fukuchiyama Line, stretching from Osaka to Fukuchiyama, carries a rich history. The Old Uori Line, branching off near Tsukaguchi Station, played a unique role in this story. Initially a horse-drawn tramway in 1891 by the Kawabe Horsecar Railway, it connected Amagasaki and Itami. This modest beginning evolved. The line transitioned to steam power and extended to Ikeda under the Settsu Railway. The ambition of the Hankaku Railway further transformed the JR Fukuchiyama Line’s Old Uori Line. The track gauge was widened. The line pushed towards Takarazuka and eventually reached Fukuchiyama. A key development came in 1898. A connection was built to Kanzaki Station (present-day Amagasaki Station) on the government railway line. This offered direct access to Osaka, diminishing the importance of the original Amagasaki terminal. The Old Uori Line, once the main route, became a branch. By the late 20th century, modernization had rendered the Amagasaki-ko Line, as it was also known, obsolete. Passenger services ceased in 1981. Freight operations followed suit in 1984. Today, the Old Uori Line exists as a ghost of Osaka’s past. Its tracks may be silent, but its story continues to resonate with the echoes of progress and transformation.
