What comes to mind when you hear the name ‘Harrisons Pocket’? Perhaps a hidden valley, tucked away in the folds of the land? Well, Joyner, as we know it today, was once known as Harrisons Pocket. It was more than just a geographical feature. It was a testament to the pioneering spirit that shaped this region. Joyner, nestled within the City of Moreton Bay, Queensland, is a tranquil suburb with a rich history. The name “Joyner” itself harks back to the early settlers who made this land their home, the Joyner family. William Joyner, a true pioneer, arrived here in 1844, claiming a vast expanse of 400 square miles south of the North Pine River. He established the “Samson Vale” station in 1845, laying the foundation for a thriving rural community that would flourish for generations. Sadly, the idyllic life of this rural community was changed forever in 1975. The construction of the North Pine Dam, a necessary project to meet the growing water needs of the region, led to the creation of Lake Samsonvale. As the lake filled, it submerged many of the farms that dotted the landscape, forever altering the face of Joyner. Despite this dramatic shift, Joyner has retained a strong sense of community. It stands as a reminder of the delicate balance between progress and preservation, a place where the echoes of the past resonate amidst the tranquility of suburban life.
