“The only shady park,” they used to say. And here at Joyland Park, in the heart of what was once a vibrant hub for Atlanta’s African American community, you can almost feel the echoes of laughter and joy. Joyland Park wasn’t always just a park. It began its life in 1921 as a groundbreaking amusement park, a place where Black families could come together and simply enjoy themselves. Imagine the excitement on that opening day in May, as 5,000 people, both Black and white, gathered to celebrate this monumental occasion. The park boasted grand animals, picnic areas, and even a baseball park where the Elk Quick Step baseball team held court. Sadly, just a month after its grand opening, disaster struck. A ferocious windstorm ripped through the park, damaging its attractions and even setting the leopards loose! Thankfully, insurance covered the damage, allowing Joyland Park to reopen and continue creating joyous memories. Though the amusement park eventually closed its gates in 1926, the spirit of Joyland lived on in the surrounding neighborhood, a collection of small, single-family homes known as Joyland. Even today, the echoes of that joyous past resonate in the park that bears its name, a testament to the enduring power of community and the importance of spaces where everyone can find joy.
