Originally a chemistry building it underwent a significant refurbishment. This £34 million project breathed new life into this A-listed structure. Every window and door were replaced. Over 1100 Smart Alitherm Heritage windows were installed. This meticulous process ensured the building retained its original aesthetic charm. Yet it gained modern efficiency.

The detail is extraordinary. The new transoms perfectly mimic the building’s original 1930s steel window design. The new EPDM gaskets are cleverly concealed. This ensures the building’s elegant lines remain intact. The design team replicated the original slim profiles. They worked for eight weeks to create a transom shadow detail unique to this project. Three new extrusion dies were even manufactured.

The Joseph Black Building houses the School of Chemistry. It provides lecture rooms laboratories and offices. The refurbishment thoughtfully minimized disruption for staff and students. It’s a remarkable blend of old and new. It seamlessly integrates historical preservation with modern functionality.
