“What was life like in Seoul centuries ago?” That is the question the Joseon Gallery invites us to consider. This gallery offers a glimpse into a captivating era of Korean history. Specifically, it showcases the art and culture of the Joseon Dynasty.

The Joseon Gallery focuses on the early Joseon period. This period spanned from 1392 to 1592. The dynasty worked to enrich society during this time. It fostered culture in Hanyang. Now, this is modern-day Seoul. Governance was assisted by scholar-officials.

Internally, Confucian ideology combined with the preceding Goryeo Dynasty’s legacy. This led to blossoming art and literature. It was centered on the royal family. The maturation of technologies spurred handicraft development. The improvement of the governance system helped too.

Externally, the Joseon Dynasty engaged in cultural exchanges. It fostered relationships with the Ming Dynasty in China. It also connected with the Muromachi shogunate in Japan. This resulted in the development of a variety of art forms.

The Joseon Gallery introduces a range of visual materials. These date from the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. Ceramics are present. Secular paintings are included. Buddhist paintings and sculptures also feature. Books and printing type are on display. These items let visitors explore the diversity of the early Joseon period. They showcase aesthetic achievements. They highlight the sophisticated tastes of the time. The new dynasty was thriving back then.

Notably, in June 2025, the National Museum of Korea planned a special exhibition. It was titled “Art of Early Joseon.” It covered 200 years of art and culture. The exhibition included approximately 120 items. “Eight Views of the Four Seasons” by Ahn Gyeon was one of them. “Poems Exchanged between the Ming Envoy and Joseon Officials” also featured. Finally, there was the “Bhaishajyaguru Buddha Commissioned by Queen Munjeong”.

Interestingly, 2025 marked the eightieth anniversary of Korea’s independence from Japan. It was the sixtieth anniversary of diplomatic normalization between South Korea and Japan. It also marked the twentieth anniversary of the National Museum of Korea’s relocation to Yongsan. This exhibition offered an opportunity to contemplate the ideals of the upcoming era. It encouraged reflection on the cultural heights achieved in the first centuries of the Joseon Dynasty.

As you leave the Joseon Gallery reflect on the ingenuity, artistry, and cultural exchange that defined an era. Consider the enduring legacy of the Joseon Dynasty. Appreciate its profound impact on the Republic of Korea.
