Remember Joseph Berliner. This plaque marks a place where an extraordinary life unfolded. Joseph Berliner was born in Hanover on August 22, 1858. He died here on May 23, 1938.

Joseph Berliner was not just any factory owner. He was an inventor. He co-founded the world’s first record factory. It was established in Hanover in 1898. He did this with his brother Emil. Emil was the inventor of the gramophone record.

Before his pivotal role in the music industry, Joseph ventured into telecommunications. In 1881, he and Emil established the J. Berliner Telefonfabrik. The company showcased its innovative transmission technology. This happened at exhibitions in Munich, Vienna, and Frankfurt. Joseph’s inventions like the Körner microphone and an automatic lever selector boosted the company. Branches sprung up across Europe.

In 1895, Joseph Berliner made Villa Simon his home. This house stands on Königsworther Platz. He lived here with his wife Therese and their daughter Klara. The villa was designed in 1860 by Heinrich Christian Tramm for Eduard Simon.

Joseph’s influence extended beyond his businesses. He chaired the synagogue community. He initiated the construction of the Jewish cemetery in Bothfeld. After his death, he was buried in the Jewish cemetery An der Strangriede. Architect Wilhelm Mackensen designed his tomb.

Tragedy struck the Berliner family. Klara, Joseph’s daughter, was deported on March 16, 1943. She died in the Theresienstadt ghetto.

The Joseph Berliner Plaque serves as a stark reminder. It marks entrepreneurial success. It also stands for the devastating impact of the Nazi era. It commemorates Joseph, Emil, Therese, and Klara Berliner. Their story echoes through Hanover’s streets. It reminds us of innovation, community, and loss.

The plaque is located on Joseph Berliner’s home, Villa Simon. It’s in the Calenberger Neustadt part of Hanover. The inscription reads “Joseph Berliner lived here.” It speaks of his achievements and family life. It also mentions Klara’s tragic fate. The Villa Simon itself was designed by Heinrich Christian Tramm in 1860.

Joseph Berliner’s legacy intertwines with Hanover’s history. He was a Commerce Councilor. He contributed significantly to the city’s industrial and religious life. His story reflects the vibrant yet vulnerable nature of Jewish life in Germany. The Josef Berliner Plaque stands as a testament. It honors a man whose contributions shaped the world of music. It mourns the loss of a family torn apart by hatred.
