He who has a country let him honor it he who does not let him conquer it. These words etched into the base of the José Martí bust in Echo Park Los Angeles resonate even today. This isn’t just any statue. It’s a powerful symbol of Cuban heritage in the heart of Los Angeles.

The bronze bust sculpted by Havana-born Sergio Lopez-Mesa stands as a tribute to José Martí the Cuban national hero. Erected in 1975 it was a gift from the Cuban-American arts non-profit Patronato Jose Marti Inc. The statue’s location in Echo Park is significant. The neighborhood welcomed the first Cuban refugees arriving in Los Angeles in 1962. Their generosity fostered a strong Cuban presence.

More than just a monument the José Martí bust served as the centerpiece of the Presencia Cubana Festival. For over twenty years this annual celebration of Cuban culture and music took place here. It commemorated Cuba’s independence from Spain in 1902. Sadly the festival ended in 2015. A permit for a dance floor was denied causing outrage within the community.

The bust itself has endured hardship. It underwent restoration in 2002. Yet the statue has faced neglect. For two years it was hidden behind fencing erected during the clearing of homeless encampments in Echo Park. Finally in early 2023 the fencing came down allowing visitors once again to honor José Martí.

Flanking the bust are a pair of rare Cuban Royal Palms. This makes the location even more unique. A plaque on the statue’s base summarizes Martí’s life the sculptor’s work and Echo Park’s importance to Cuban-Americans. Another plaque offers accolades to Martí as a symbol of Spanish-American culture. These details add layers to the story of this enduring monument.

The José Martí bust in Echo Park is more than a statue. It represents a community’s history resilience and cultural pride. It reminds us of a vibrant Cuban presence in Los Angeles and a festival that once brought joy and celebration to this corner of the city. It’s a story of enduring legacy and unwavering spirit. This small yet powerful monument continues to stand tall.
