Navigan, this church holds a rich history, weathered storms, and witnessed immense growth. The original services were held in a modest two-room shotgun house on St. Charles and Pierce streets. This humble beginning wouldn’t hold back the spirit of faith that bloomed in this community.
A short time later, the congregation moved to a lot purchased at 2017 Dowling Street. The first deacons, Brothers Gilbert, Moses, Merritt, and Washington, provided unwavering support to Rev. Navigan as he faced numerous challenges in building a church with a lasting impact. The church’s journey wasn’t without its trials. The original building was destroyed in the devastating 1900 hurricane that ravaged Houston. Undeterred, the congregation regrouped, rebuilding stronger than ever before.
Throughout its history, Jordan River Missionary Baptist Church has seen a succession of esteemed pastors, each contributing to its growth and legacy. Under the leadership of Pastor Lofton, the church flourished for nearly half a century. He was deeply loved and respected by the community, and his legacy lives on through the impact he made on the church and its members. In the 20th century, the church experienced a surge in membership, reaching 1500 members. New educational and outreach programs strengthened its presence in the community.
Today, Jordan River Missionary Baptist Church still stands proudly on Anita Street, a symbol of hope, resilience, and unwavering faith. It continues to serve its members and the community, carrying on a rich and impactful legacy.
