Who is Jordan, and why is his graffiti here in Moscow? The Jordan graffiti in Moscow isn’t about Michael Jordan, the basketball player. It’s about Jorit, the Italian street artist. He’s known for his large-scale, hyperrealistic portraits. Jorit’s real name is Ciro Cerullo. He painted a mural in Mariupol, Ukraine, depicting a young girl. This mural caused controversy due to its resemblance to a photograph by Helen Whittle, and because of Jorit’s pro-Russian stance. His work there was reportedly funded by the Kremlin. Jorit also created a mural in Sochi during a youth summit. It was at this summit that he met Vladimir Putin, creating further controversy and leading to calls for EU sanctions against him. Jorit defends his work as promoting peace. But critics like Italian politicians Carlo Calenda and Antonio Tajani see it as Kremlin propaganda.
