Hidden amidst the vibrant tapestry of Kalighat, Kolkata, lies the Jora Mandir, a testament to devotion and history. Have you ever wondered about the origins of these twin temples? Their story begins in the late eighteenth century, thanks to Baidyanath Halder. He envisioned a sacred space dedicated to Sri Sri Bhubaneswar and Sri Sri Rameswar. The Jora Mandir temples, crafted in the traditional Bengali aatchala style, stand on a raised platform. A single entrance leads into this serene complex. The very bricks and tiles whisper tales of meticulous craftsmanship, using thin bricks prevalent in that era. Although traces of floral motifs and terracotta work might exist, recent renovations have partially concealed them. A fascinating detail shared by Abhishek Halder reveals the journey of the Shiva lingas. They were brought from Orissa, traveling by boat along the Adi Ganga. In those times, the Adi Ganga was a navigable waterway. The founder, Baidyanath Halder, would personally bathe the lingas each morning with the sacred Ganges water. While a courtyard once extended both in front and behind the temples, only the front portion remains today. The Jora Mandir continues to be a place of active worship. Daily rituals occur twice a day, morning and evening. However, Shivratri is the main festival celebrated here. During this auspicious time, the temple is adorned with decorations, and a multitude of devotees come to offer their prayers. Interestingly, from the Jora Mandir, one can glimpse the top of the iconic Kalighat Kali Temple. Each of the twin temples features a single door and a window, positioned to face each other. The temple dedicated to Sri Sri Rameswar boasts a slightly larger sanctum area. The Jora Mandir remains a quiet haven of devotion, a hidden gem within the bustling heart of Kolkata.
