How does a floating oval feel? That’s the first impression of Jongno Tower. This 33-story giant in Seoul’s Jongno district isn’t just any office building. It’s a statement. Designed by Rafael Viñoly Architects and completed in 1999 it stands 132 meters tall. Jongno Tower is known for its unique architectural design. Its top floor once housed a restaurant and bar. These offered spectacular views of Seoul but are sadly now closed.

The building’s most striking feature? That remarkable oval. It floats above seven empty stories. This hollow space is a bold architectural choice. It’s a testament to modern design. The overall triangular shape adds to its uniqueness. The tower’s design incorporates glass and steel. Its sleek modern aesthetic stands in contrast to the surrounding area. This area includes the traditionally reconstructed Bosin-gak belfry.

That belfry is an important part of Seoul’s history. During the Joseon dynasty the bell inside was rung to open and close the city gates. This happened every day for centuries. The original bell resides now in the National Museum. A replica remains in the belfry. It’s struck 33 times each New Year’s Eve. This is a nod to the bell’s past and to Buddhist tradition.

The tower itself is more than just a pretty face. The largest Starbucks in South Korea is located inside. This occupies over 1000 square meters. It’s a lively spot popular with locals and tourists alike. This massive coffee shop is a testament to the tower’s role as a community hub. It’s not just an office building. It’s a vibrant place for people to meet and enjoy Seoul.

The basement of Jongno Tower offers further surprises. It is connected to the subway. This provides easy access for commuters and visitors. A shopping arcade is also located there. This includes Bandi and Luni’s one of Seoul’s largest bookstores. This large store has a significant selection of English-language books. So whether you are looking for breathtaking city views or a quiet place to read Jongno Tower has something for everyone. The building stands as a symbol of Seoul’s modern development. It preserves a deep connection to its rich cultural past. It represents a unique blend of old and new. That’s the story of Jongno Tower. Enjoy the rest of your tour.
