In the heart of Houston, Texas, stands Jones Memorial Methodist Church. It’s more than just bricks and mortar. It’s a testament to faith, perseverance, and community. Jones Memorial Methodist Church began in the warmth of a home, not a grand hall. On September 19, 1960, sixteen souls gathered in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Nora. These sixteen became the church’s charter members, laying the foundation for what Jones Memorial Methodist Church is today. The church’s name honors Bishop Robert Jones, the fifth Black Bishop of the Methodist Episcopal Church. This decision, made on October 1, 1960, cemented the church’s connection to a rich history of Methodist leadership. The church’s first pastor, Dr. J. S. Scott, Sr., served the congregation from November 1, 1960, to July 1, 1975. Dr. Scott’s vision and dedication played a crucial role in the church’s early growth and development. Interestingly, it was Dr. Scott who initially surveyed the area, recognizing the need for a Methodist church in the community. His foresight paved the way for the creation of Jones Memorial Methodist Church. By February 1, 1963, the congregation had built its first physical structure, affectionately nicknamed the “Little White Church.” This building served as a spiritual home for many years. Jones Memorial Methodist Church continued to grow and thrive under the leadership of subsequent pastors. Rev. Lewis Jackson, Sr. served from 1975 to 1980, followed by Rev. Dr. Joseph Cox from 1980 to 1982. Rev. Louis J. Greer then led the congregation from 1982 to 1997. Each pastor brought their unique contributions to the vibrant tapestry of Jones Memorial Methodist Church. Today, Jones Memorial Methodist Church continues its mission of serving the community. It stands as a testament to the vision of its founders and the dedication of its members. It’s a place where faith and community intersect, offering a spiritual home to all who enter its doors.
