Hidden amongst the tranquil hills of Ohara, Kyoto, lies Jikkō-in, a serene temple with a fascinating history. Jikkō-in isn’t just a temple; it’s a time capsule. Originally located near the Ohara Mausoleum, Jikkō-in was moved to its present location in 1919. This move didn’t diminish its charm. It enhanced it, adding another layer to its already rich story. The Kyakuden, or Guest Hall, welcomes visitors with open arms. Reconstructed in 1921, it houses the Jizo trinity. This trinity consists of a seated Jizo Bosatsu, protector of children. He is flanked by Bishamonten and Fudo-myo-o. Look up. The ramma, the decorative lintel, features poems and portraits of 36 Chinese poets. These Edo-period masterpieces, painted by the Kano school, add an artistic touch to the spiritual atmosphere. Jikkō-in holds a hidden gem for music lovers. Ancient musical instruments, once used for shomyo, Japanese Buddhist chanting, are displayed in the tokonoma. These instruments offer a glimpse into the temple’s musical past. The resident priests of Jikkō-in used them to develop and refine shomyo. Jikkō-in offers a tranquil escape with beautiful gardens. For a small fee, visitors can enjoy matcha and wagashi while admiring the west garden. This garden features a borrowed scenery of Mount Konpira and Mount Koshio. The Keishin-en garden is also visible from the hall. This pond and waterfall viewing garden, designed in the late Edo period, is a true highlight. Water from the Ritsu River flows down a small waterfall into the heart-shaped Shinji-ike pond. The Horai Ishigumi, a rock arrangement representing Mount Penglai, adds a touch of mythology. A tsukiyama, or artificial hill, completes the scene. A pine tree, symbolizing a crane, and a five-storied pagoda stand proudly on the hill. An island in the pond, representing a tortoise, joins the crane as a symbol of longevity and happiness. Jikkō-in offers a more intimate experience compared to other temples in Ohara. This allows for peaceful strolls and photo opportunities. The gourd-shaped pond, surrounded by rocks from the mountains of Jikkō-in, beckons visitors to explore. The rare fudan zakura cherry blossom, blooming from late September into spring, adds a touch of unexpected beauty. Jikkō-in offers a unique experience. It allows visitors to witness the beauty of both sakura and autumn leaves at the same time. Jikkō-in is nestled between Sanzenin and Shōrin-in, making it an easy addition to any Ohara itinerary. It promises a serene escape with a touch of history, art, and natural beauty.
