Tucked away in the Rakusai neighborhood of western Kyoto, Jōju-in temple awaits. It’s a hidden gem, often missed by the usual tourist crowds. Jōju-in offers a tranquil escape. The tall Japanese maple trees that surround Jōju-in create a vibrant spectacle, especially in autumn. Their fiery red leaves blanket the grounds in a breathtaking display of color. Jōju-in was founded in 810 by the monk Ennin, later known as Jikaku Daishi. Emperor Saga commissioned the temple. It originally belonged to the Tendai School of Buddhism. Later, it became associated with the Hamuro family, who gave their name to the mountain where Jōju-in stands: Hamuro-yama. Today, Jōju-in is part of the Obaku sect. This sect of Zen Buddhism has strong Chinese influences. You can see this in the architecture, especially in the circular window on the facade of the main hall, the Hondo. The Hondo was reconstructed in 1697. Inside, you can see a statue of the Shakyamuni Buddha, along with Dharma Daishi and Kannon. Another notable building on the grounds of Jōju-in is the Hojo hall. This building has a unique history. It was once a samurai residence connected to the Date clan. Date Tsunamura, the fourth lord of Sendai, spent his childhood here. Hidden within the walls is a secret escape route, a reminder of those turbulent times. Jōju-in’s garden is a small, peaceful oasis from the Edo period. A pond sits at its center. The main Buddha worshipped here is Nyoirin Kannon, also known as Nyoirin Kanzeon Bosatsu. If you visit Jōju-in in autumn, you can experience a special tour. This tour includes access to the inside of the Hondo and Hojo pavilions. You can appreciate the vibrant koyo foliage up close. Jōju-in’s location, near Arashiyama, adds to its charm. The surrounding area offers other attractions. You can explore the beautiful landscapes of Oharano or visit nearby temples and shrines.
