“New Johor” whispers the name Johor Bahru a city brimming with history. Imagine a humble fishing village Tanjung Puteri transformed. Temenggong Daeng Ibrahim arrived in 1858. He renamed the area Iskandar Puteri. He fostered growth. Chinese and Javanese migrants arrived. They cleared the land. They cultivated pepper and gambier. Canals were dug roads built. Upon Temenggong’s death in 1862 Sultan Abu Bakar took the reins. He renamed the settlement Johor Bahru meaning “New Johor”. He oversaw remarkable progress. The tranquility was disrupted. Japanese forces occupied Johor Bahru from 1942 to 1945. The city became a center of Malay nationalism. UMNO a major political party was founded here. It’s a pivotal moment in Malaysian history. It demonstrates the city’s role in shaping the nation.

After World War II Johor Bahru retained its status as Johor’s capital. In 1994 it was officially granted city status. It became the heart of Iskandar Malaysia a special economic zone. This has fueled massive growth and modernization. The city’s skyline changed.
